Past Featured Meetings of the Month

June - Sunday Evening Big Book Study

"Not a Glum Lot OA Meeting" by Bob P.
(Sunday 7 PM at Seaview Methodist Church)

Our meeting started about one year and a half ago. It is a neat format, a little different than the typical meeting in Seattle.

It is a Big Book meeting and not only do we read the first 153 pages, but we read all the stories in the back. Many meetings read only the first 153 pages as this is the essence of the program and has the stories of the founders of AA. We have decided the read all the stories because these stories have different people applying the steps. They are also told by people of different ethnic groups, different countries and include men and women. So far, this has been very rewarding because they also describe in story form the essence of the program.

In addition we are reading from the Fourth Edition that includes additional stories not in the earlier editions.

We meet on Sunday night at 7 PM. Many members want a meeting just before the new work week starts. Also it is an hour-long meeting to give you more time to prepare for the week. It starts a little earlier than most meetings and ends at 8 PM. The room itself has upholstered chairs and good light so it is a comfortable environment.

We are located in West Seattle, on the way to the Fauntleroy-Vashon Ferry.

The directions are as follows:

From Interstate 5, take the West Seattle Freeway. Stay in the two lanes that curve left (South). Approaching the stoplight, stay in the two right lanes and follow the signs for Fauntleroy Avenue or the ferry. At the corner of Faunteroy and California turn right (North) on California. Go to the second light and turn left (West) to Graham. A few blocks ahead you will see the Seaview Methodist Church. Park in the lot just before the church. Go in the back door, turn left up the stairs and go the first door on the right.

May - Sunday Evening HOW

"Not Perfect, but Darn Good" by Pam C.

Looking for the perfect meeting? Well, it's not perfect, but it's darn good, and you're invited!

Come on down to the 5:30 p.m. Sunday OA-HOW meeting at St. Paul's church in Ballard. It's a great way to wrap-up the weekend--contributing to and being inspired by the experience, strength, and hope exchanged in our shares. HOW meetings are supportive of weighed and measured food plans and emphasize daily use of the tools, but we're not exclusive! All are warmly welcomed! We have a mix of longtimers, newcomers, relapse survivors, and available sponsors.

We meet in the large downstairs meeting room for one hour. The format varies from week to week: we read the OA 12 and 12 step of the month one week, the tradition of the month another week, we read from the AA Big Book another week, and there is a speaker meeting once a month. We offer a newcomers meeting each week, and we celebrate abstinence birthdays with coins each month.

This meeting has been around for many years and is still going strong. It has been my home group for ten years. Come recover with us!

April - Monday Morning Phinney

"A Room with a View" by Mary H.

Welcome to the Monday morning "Together We Can" Step meeting of Overeaters Anonymous.

That is how we begin each Monday at 10 AM. Our group gathers in the library on the first floor of St John’s Lutheran Church, a few blocks away from the Woodland Park Zoo. And it really is a "room with a view". Even on cloudy days, there is a beautiful view of the Olympic Mountains, Puget Sound (and Ballard).

Usually there are only a few people present as the meeting begins. By 10:15, the group swells to 25 regular members sitting in an ever widening circle. (On federal holidays, nearly 40 members are present.) This seating arrangement really does represent the tone of the meeting - a circle. All are welcome: newcomer, old timers, mid-timers and returning members. One member frequently says this is a "come as you are" program. And we are a "come as you are" meeting. We are happy to share what has worked for us. The format includes a brief sharing about the tools and a time for sponsors to introduce themselves. (Usually 3-4 are available.) Later, there is a time for newcomers/returning members to share if they care to.

We study the month’s corresponding tradition on the first week of the month, a speaker is arranged for the 3rd Monday and on the other weeks we focus on a step. The shares are as varied as each member. You may hear laughter, may see some tears, and may learn about life with feelings. Hopefully you will feel the healing and enthusiasm as we all work the program while learning how to live life without compulsive overeating. After the meeting, the welcome continues. All are invited to bring their lunch. Usually a few do, with many staying at least a few extra minutes for fellowship.

So, come on over to Phinney Ridge on Monday mornings. We’ll have a cup of tea waiting for you.

March - OA Telephone Meetings

As the Sponsor Coordinator, I often tell people who call me about OA’s online and telephone meetings but I had never called until the snow came in December and I didn’t drive for almost two weeks. More than a week had gone by and I hadn’t been to a meeting and I was struggling with abstinence. Out of desperation, I called in to my first telephone meeting. I knew I’d be welcome and I felt like I’d found a new home! It’s been several months since the December storms but I still call in to the telephone meetings and have made them a regular part of my OA routine.

If I had to pick one meeting that I attend regularly, it would be the "Relapse/12 Step Within" which meets nightly at 9 PM. It’s wonderful to hear people from all over the country and sometimes the world. So if you’re having a tough time getting to a face-to-face meeting, pick up the phone and call in to a OA telephone meeting. Share if you want or just listen, it’s all good, it all works.
